The Challenge: Annual Hot Water Heater Maintenance
Maintaining large-scale water heating systems can be time-consuming and costly. At Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins, a simple innovation has transformed the way the facility manages its four Steam Domestic Hot Water Heaters (DHWH).
For over 12 years, the Twins relied on a contractor to perform an annual teardown of their DHWH units. This process involved:
- Fully removing tube bundles
- Soaking them in acid baths for 3–4 days to remove lime scale, calcium deposits, and biological buildup
- Cleaning the tank interiors and sediments
- Recoating tanks every 4 years at $2,000 per unit

This process, while effective, was labor-intensive, costly, and disruptive.
